Château Bérard – ORGANIC

The Story

Mr Mauro Sr took over Château Bérard in 1972 and replanted nearly all of the vineyards. A few years later, the acquisition of a second estate expanded the core vineyard and over a ten-year period of time this became one single wine farm.

Significant changes were initiated in the late ’90s and Chateau Bérard produced its first organic crop in 2012, after having meticulously followed the 3 year conversion period.

History shows that the consistency of efforts made in a vineyard bring wines to the full expression of their potential. The switch from traditional agriculture to sustainable growing and finally to organic farming, undoubtedly reflects the increasing focus on quality.

Production

Chateau Bérard is located on a geographical break line, and consequently benefits from a wide variety of high quality soil types. The major advantage of this is that the “vintage factor” is regulated by the “buffer effect” of soil diversity. This ensures from one year to another greater consistency of the harvest, in comparison with other vineyards planted on one kind of soil.

Total surface of the estate: 71 Ha, 16 a, 04 ca

62% Cab Sauvignon, 31% Merlot Noir, 5% Cab Franc, 2% Malbec

Petit Soleil

The story

This wine comes from the same property as “Le Pin”, whose former mansion built in the 15th century used to be the residence of the Dukes of the region. Since 1997, “Le Pin” has become Château le Pin Beausoleil, and the building has benefited from a careful restoration.

Its owner Michael Hallek, professor of medicine in Germany and great lover of France, acquired Château Le Pin Beausoleil in 2004. Skilfully advised by Stéphane Derenoncourt, he produces a first-class wine.

The wine

98% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc

Petit Soleil is produced from young vines of a very favorable clay-limestone soil. Blend of  Merlot (98%) with a hint of Cabernet Franc (2%), this wine is a real red fruit extract. Dense nose with notes of blackcurrants and blueberries. This charming wine offers an unctuous mouth, with very fine and supple tannins. Its aromas of black fruits and spices make it a perfectly balanced wine, with a fresh finish.

Les Coteaux

The Story

From the Gironde estuary to the border with the Dordogne, passing by the banks of the Garonne, the Côtes de Bordeaux impress with the diversity of its landscape and its rich heritage. Historic châteaux, manor houses, fortresses and splendid homes, immortalized by famous artists, are evidence of the rich history of the region. Villages retaining their narrow streets  and fortified towns and windmills are signs of a centuries old tradition of agricultural and trading activity.

The “Côtes de Bordeaux” bring together the terroirs of Blaye, Cadillac, Castillon and Francs. This new appellation (2009) has allowed a better understanding of the products thanks to the use of a common family name “Côtes de Bordeaux” along with the name of the terroir “Blaye, Cadillac, Castillon or Francs”, thus enhancing the personality and typical character of each wine. This takes the blending tradition a step further as it allows producers to blend wines from different areas within Bordeaux giving greater flexibility to make consistent high quality wines.

The wine

The varieties involved here are the traditional Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Cabernet Sauvignon brings elegance, depth and structure along with its hallmarks blackcurrant/cassis flavours and the Merlot soft, ripe summer fruits. Put a little in a big glass and swill it around…. All the flavors are there !

Food Pairing

This is a food wine, and the perfect pairing is with roast beef with all the trimmings but it is equally good with all roast meats and full flavored stews.
