L’îlot de Haut-Bergeron

AOC Sauternes

The Story

Situated in the village of Preinac, l’îlot de Haut-Bergeron is the only plot in the Sauternes appellation to be on an island ! It is towards the end of the eighties that Château de Haut-Bergeron bought a small plot on the island and start planting vines there. Happy with the results of the first plantings, the estate acquired the rest of the island in 2008. This 5ha nineyard is family run and belongs to Hervé and Patrick Lamothe, 5th generation winemakers. The Lamothes is one of the oldest wine making families in Sauternes and the vineyards of the main Château are adjacent to those of Château d’Yquem.

The Wine

80% Sémillon, 10% Sauvignon blanc, 10% Muscadelle

It is transferred to French oak barrels immediately after fermentation for a 12 months maturation period. In its early years, it will show aromas of citrus, lychee, vanilla and acacia. When more mature, favours will be dominated by apricot, honey, toasted almond while remaining charmingly delicate and fresh. Because of its unique geographical situation, this wine shows great freshness, and elegance.

Grandissime’s Advice

«Harvest and winemaking techniques allow this estate to produce one of the best Sauternes available. Enjoy on its own, as an apéritif or with creamy chicken, blue cheeses, chocolate pudding.»
